Orchid Tip of the Day

Temperature

Most common type of orchids, Cattleya, Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilum, Oncidium, Miltonia, etc. can be grown successfully under normal household temperatures. If you are comfortable, then the orchids will be fine also. Many orchids will grow outside of their ideal temperature range. Temperature, light and humidity need to be balanced for optimal growth. When the temperatures are cooler, reduce watering and humidity to keep them dryer. And when warmer, increase the air movement and water.

Orchids need a day-night temperature fluctuation of 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit to produce beautiful blooms. During the day, when the temperature is higher, the orchids produce energy in the form of carbohydrates. They store the energy at night when the temperatures are cooler.

The table below gives preferred temperature ranges for cool, warm, and intermediate growing orchids. Orchids will tolerate temperatures outside of thier preferred range for a period of time. Many hybrids will be tolerant of wider temperature ranges since they may include species from different ranges in their background.
