Laeliinae is subtribe of orchids occurring exclusively in the tropical regions of the Americas. It includes over 40 orchid genera, such as Brassavola, Cattleya, Epidendrum, Laelia, and Sophronitis. Epidendrum is the largest genus within this subtribe, with over 1000 species.
Oncidiinae is a subtribe of orchids that consists of about 70 closely related genera. It includes over 1000 species in genera such as Brassia, Miltonia, Miltoniopsis, Odontoglosum and Oncidum. Species are widely distributed throughout tropical America, including Florida and the Caribbean. They usually have well-developed pseudobulbs and conduplicate (folded lengthwise) leaves. Most orchids in this sutribe are epiphytic, but there are some terrestrials.
The subtribe Paphiopedilinae contains one genus of orchids, Paphiopedilum, which consists of more than 70 species native to South China, India, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. Most Paphiopediums are terrestrials, growing in humus layers on the forest floor. Pahpiopediums, lack pseudobulbs and are sympodial, growing new shoots.
The subtribe Phragmipediinae contains one genus of orchids, Phragmipedium, which consists of about 20 species native to Mexico, Central and Shouth America. Phragmipedium species may be terrestrial, epiphytic or lithophytic in habit. Like Pahpiopediums, they lack pseudobulbs and are sympodial.
The subtribe Sarcanthinae contains over 1000 species in more than 100 genera. Several well-known genera in this subtribe are Angraecum, Phalaenopsis, Trichoglottis and Vanda. All members have a monopodial growth habit and lack pseudobulbs. Most species growth in Asia and some in Africa.
