Welcome to The Orchid Grove blog!

I am very excited to share this new journey with you and I hope you will find my blog helpful.

I thought I should share a little bit my experience with mental health. It is a bit daunting, knowing that I am sharing with the whole world, so please be nice!

I have struggled with anxiety since I was in year 9 and I knew that I had to start to talk to someone about it. Now, I know that some people are not very keen on the idea of sharing their problems with a complete stranger or are a bit influenced by the idea that talking to someone is a sign of weakness. It may seem unnecessary and/or scary but it is none of those things. Professionals have gone through many years of training and know what they’re doing so their opinion is definitely worth seeking AND it is actually really really really important and has helped me and a lot of other people deal with their problems. 

My journey with mental illness did not end there though. Unfortunately, I faced some of my biggest problems for the majority of last year and was clinically diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. This does not make me crazy or any less of a person than anybody else and please disregard any of the stigma around this condition because it is largely unfounded. 

I have learned to accept that life is not a steady journey and there will be parts of my life that may be more positive or more negative than other parts but at the end of the day I remind myself that everything is going to be just fine. With the help of my psychologist, psychiatrist, and GP (and also people who are close to me, particularly my boyfriend hehe) I have improved immeasurably and have learned a lot about managing my mental health.

I hope that through this blog, I would be able to share with you some of the things I have learned. I want you to know that this is a safe place to talk about what you’re going through, the negatives and also the positives.   1. Hi Grace, I have recently been diagnosed with BPD (a month ago) and i’m struggling with coming to terms with, what for me feels like a bit of a life sentence. As naive as it might be, i always hoped one day i’d wake up and be ‘fine’ but obviously that was never going to happen and i’m facing that reality now. How did you cope with the diagnosis – do you have any advice? – C xx

    1. Hi C, thank you for sharing your story with me.

      I understand what you mean by it feeling like a life sentence. I can assure you that it’s not, but it is something that you have to manage for the rest of your life. I am aware that some people make people with BPD like they sound crazy, but no no no. We are no less people than anybody else and it does not make us weak.
      Think of dealing with BPD as like raising a little pup. The first year or so is about training the pup and challenges do come and go. As the pup grows, it gets easier because you have a whole range of techniques to deal with problems. It’s actually been shown that the symptoms of BPD tend to decrease as you get older. So like the pup getting at better at dealing with life, your condition will improve if you learn how to use your techniques and strategies to manage it. Some of the things I focused on was my breathing techniques, which I have discussed in depth with my psychologist and I know that it works for me. Find something that works for you in discussion with your therapist and just keep doing it.

      It’s not easy to have these techniques automatically come to you when you need them. It takes a lot of practice, and I have to say that I am no master at it yet. But keep practicing and surround yourself with people you love! I always found that keeping myself busy and not spending too much time alone helped me deal with the diagnosis.

      Always remember, you are not in this alone!
